What do you think about these topics

Here are a few things that I think we should discuss in class
1. the issues of alcoholism for Native Americans living on a reservation
2. what does Alexie want us to know about Native Americans, is he trying to break up stereotypes?
3. Junior's friendships with Rowdy and Gordy

  1. What we can discuss in class: Junior is torn between his love for his trive and the awareness that his future depends upon escaping the reservation.
The lack of opportunity the other kids have in the rez.
I like the quote on page 13, "It sucks to be poor, and it sucks to feel that you somehow deserve to be poor....It's an ugly circly and there's nothing you can do about it".
Why is Rowdy so mean and angry?
Why did Mary hid in the basement for so many years?
What did Junior mean when he said, "white fathers could be in the same room and still be far away?"
We can also discuss the higly symbolic backetball face-off.

  2. In reference to Michelle's question about stereotypes, I would like to point to one of my favorite quotes in the book:
"I used to think the world was broken down by tribes. By black and white. By Indian and white. But I know that isn't true. The world is only broken into two tribes: The people who are assholes and the people who are not" (176).
